Make bath time your time

Make bath time your time

An evening bath is a good way to relieve the stresses of the day

In the summer we tend to hop in and out of the shower to cool down and freshen up, but as the evenings get darker, there's nothing quite like a relaxing bath to soak away the stress. Slipping into the bubbles may be just what you need to restore your energy – and attitude! – after a tiring workday.

null

A restorative ritual
If you want to make the most of your bath, it helps to gather together everything you need before you start: whether you prefer a sponge, flannel or bath mitt, oil, bubbles or salts, your favourite soap or bath gel, a soft towel or two, and creams and moisturisers to apply to your freshly cleansed skin...

There are plenty of products on the market that will cleanse, tone, relax, hydrate and revitalize your skin and transform an ordinary bath time into a luxury pampering session without breaking the bank. It's important to create the right atmosphere, too, so you may want to add soothing music and scented candles to complete the ritual.

A time just for you

The key is to immerse yourself in this world of bubbles, letting the foam caress your body and your favourite scents pervade your skin. A bath doesn't take long, but by making it your own time it will have a truly restorative effect. It can also be a good ally for your skin, and bathing is one of the secrets for a silken complexion.

Time and temperature

The ideal duration of a bath is between ten and 15 minutes, depending on whether you want it to relax or invigorate; if it's the latter, you shouldn't stay in the water for more than five minutes. Water temperature is vital, and, particularly for a relaxing effect, the bath should be deep enough for the body to be well submerged.

To some extent, temperature depends on what your body is willing to tolerate, but it should never be above 37-38 ° (slightly higher than body temperature). For rheumatism, muscle and joint pain, heat will have a beneficial effect, but for fighting the flab and cellulite, cooler is  better. If you bathe just before bed, you are almost guaranteed to sleep well, and it's worth rounding off the session with a slightly cooler shower to stimulate circulation.

If you want the bath to relax you – perhaps the most likely scenario after a tiring day - the water should be warm enough to relax the muscles that are suffering from the most tension, such as back and neck. You can use a bath pillow or a folded towel to support your neck, and it's not a good idea to stay in the water for more than 15 minutes.

A bonus for your skin

To complete the beauty treatment, you can take advantage of the time in the water to apply a face mask – cleansing, moisturising or relaxing. Then switch off the outside world for a short while: close your eyes, listen to the music and breath in the fragrance of the bath oil or the candles. When you rejoin the world, everything should be back in proportion and easier to deal with.

Remember:
  • Take the time to rest not just your body, but your mind: focus on pleasant thoughts.
  • Keep the bathroom warm and comfortable, not excessively hot.

  • Why not try a relaxing herbal tea – in a unbreakable cup, of course, to avoid accidents!

  • Never get out of the bath suddenly – particularly if you find you're getting dozy – as you may become dizzy or slip.

KIM KARDASHIAN WOULD 'ELOPE' WITH KRIS

Kim Kardashian would ''elope'' if she could have her wedding again

The 30-year-old socialite - who married basketball star Kris Humphries in a lavish ceremony in California in August - admitted she found her nuptials ''so stressful'' she would run off to another country and tie the knot without any guests if she had the chance to do it again.

When asked by talk show host Ellen DeGeneres what she would do differently, Kim said: ''Elope! I was so crazy for an entire month ... I literally I went crazy. It was so stressful.''

During their appearance on ''The Ellen DeGeneres Show'' - which will air today (October 5, 2011) - Kim and Kris renewed their vows with Ellen officiating the mock ceremony complete with chapel.

The ''Keeping Up with the Kardashians'' star - who filmed her nuptials for her reality TV show - recently explained while she was ''really, really calm'' on the day of her wedding, she was sad the event went by so quickly, with the couple only spending five days on their honeymoon.

Kim said: ''The wedding day, I was actually really, really calm that day. My one regret is that I wish I had more time to really enjoy the wedding, because there's so much going on that you're running around and now that I look back, I'm like, that day happened so fast I wish I had more time.''

JACKSON FAMILY TO ATTEND LIFE OF AN ICON PREMIERE

Katherine Jackson and her children Tito and Rebbie will join David Gest for a special screening of ''Michael Jackson: The Life Of An Icon'' - which comprises interviews with more than 50 of Michael's closest friends and family - at the star-studded event at the Empire, Leicester Square, in London next month.

David will also host a special after-party which will feature performances from several soul legends who appear in the film and he will also present Tito and his new fiancee Sonia Galineo with a special gift to mark their recent engagement.

David said: ''I am thrilled that Katherine, Tito, Rebbie, director Andrew Eastel, Thomas [Mesereau] and Susan [Yu] as well as 100 stars will be in attendance for the world premiere of my new film. There is going to be a jam at the invitation-only after-party following the premiere and more than 20 legendary artists who appear in the film will take part. This party is going to be historic!''

Katherine, Tito, Rebbie, Andrew, David and lawyers Thomas Mesereau and Susan Yu - who successfully acquitted Michael of all charges during his child molestation court case in 2005 - will also participate in a special Q&A to discuss their involvement in the project prior to the screening.

Jackson 5 star Tito popped the question to fitness and beauty expert Sonia - who he has been dating for years - in August and she didn't hesitate to say ''yes''.

David hosted a party at the Bellagio hotel in Las Vegas last month for Tito and Sonia which was also attended by other members of the Jackson family including his brother Jackie and mother Katherine.

During the bash, David was mobbed by 40 English people dining at a nearby table who were asking him about his time on ''I'm A Celebrity... Get Me Out of Here!'' in 2006 and his housekeeper Vaginica Seaman, who he spoke about in the jungle and whom Michael knew.

Katherine, 81, asked the producer: ''Is that her real name?''

To which he replied: ''Yes.''

Katherine then exclaimed: ''She should change it!''

The 58-year-old star also wanted to thrown the bash to lift the family's spirits ahead of the start of the involuntary manslaughter trial of Dr. Conrad Murray - who is accused of administering the lethal dose of Propofol which killed Michael in June 2009.

''Michael Jackson: The Life Of An Icon'' will hold its world premiere at the Empire in London's Leicester Square on November 2.

More youngsters having unsafe sex: Global study

London: Young people across the globe are having more unprotected sex and know less about effective contraception options, a multinational survey revealed on Monday.
More youngsters having unsafe sex: Global study

The "Clueless or Clued Up: Your Right to be informed about contraception" study prepared for World Contraception Day (WCD) reports that the number of young people having unsafe sex with a new partner increased by 111 percent in France, 39 percent in the USA and 19 percent in Britain in the last three years.

"No matter where you are in the world, barriers exist which prevent teenagers from receiving trustworthy information about sex and contraception, which is probably why myths and misconceptions remain so widespread even today," a member of the WCD task force, Denise Keller, said in a statement with the results of the study.

"When young people have access to contraceptive information and services, they can make choices that affect every aspect of their lives which is why it`s so important that accurate and unbiased information is easily available for young people to obtain," Keller said.

The survey, commissioned by Bayer Healthcare Pharmaceuticals and endorsed by 11 international non-governmental organizations, questioned more than 6,000 young people from 26 countries including Chile, Poland and China, on their attitudes toward sex and contraception.

The level of unplanned pregnancies among young people is a major global issue, campaigners say, and the rise in unprotected sex in several counties has sparked concern about the quality of sex education available to youngsters.

In Europe, only half of respondents receive sex education from school, compared to three quarters across Latin America, Asia Pacific and the USA.

Many respondents also said that they felt too embarrassed to ask a healthcare professional for contraception.

"What young people are telling us is that they are not receiving enough sex education or the wrong type of information about sex and sexuality," spokeswoman for the International Planned Parenthood Federation, Jennifer Woodside said in a statement.

"The results show that too many young people either lack good knowledge about sexual health, do not feel empowered enough to ask for contraception or have not learned the skills to negotiate contraceptive use with their partners to protect themselves from unwanted pregnancies or STIs (sexually transmitted infections)," she said.

More than a third of respondents in Egypt believe bathing or showering after sex will prevent pregnancy, and more than a quarter of those in Thailand and India believe that having intercourse during menstruation is an effective form of contraception.

But the fact that many young people engage in unprotected sex and the prevalence of harmful myths should not come as a surprise, Woodside said.

"How can young people make decisions that are right for them and protect them from unwanted pregnancy and STIs, if we do not empower them and enable them to acquire the skills they need to make those choices?" she said.

Testosterone therapy can overcome male menopause

Testosterone therapy can overcome male menopause
London: Male menopause seems like a downward spiral into hell with fatigue, depression, obesity, loss of libido, memory and insomnia taking their toll, thanks to falling levels of testosterone. But scientists hold out hope for men in their 40s.

Malcolm Curruthers, study co-author from the University College London, said the misery of male menopause can easily be prevented and treated.

"Testosterone deficiency not only causes symptoms that can wreck lives and loves from as early as a man`s 40s, it is linked to heart disease, diabetes and brittle bones. Some people are even beginning to link it to Alzheimer`s disease as well," said Curruthers.

The male menopause, which is being re-branded testosterone deficiency syndrome, so as to distance it from the female version, affects one in five men over 50, the Daily Mail reports.

But younger men can also suffer such symptoms, caused by plunging levels of the sex hormone.

Earlier this year, Robbie Williams, 37, shocked his legions of female fans by admitting he was injecting himself with testosterone to boost his sex drive.

Jabs can last up to six months and daily gels are also available.
The male menopause has long been dismissed as an excuse for men behaving badly in middle age, usually purchasing a ridiculous motorbike or fast car.

Some doctors dismiss the symptoms as an inevitable consequence of ageing.

Others say that symptoms such as hot flushes, sweating, depression and loss of sex drive are just side-effects of being overweight, lazy and smoking and drinking too much.

But one of the biggest stumbling blocks has been fears that topping up a man`s testosterone raises his risk of prostate cancer.

The study, which tracked the health for 15 years of almost 1,500 men treated at Carruthers` Men`s Health Centre in London`s Harley Street, found this concern to be unfounded.

The men treated were no more likely to develop the cancer than other men and raising testosterone levels was found to help the prostate in other ways.

The worst excuses to avoid having sex

Washington: Not in the mood for sex? Used sleepy and tired as excuses to your partner too often? Cringe not as you are not alone, as millions worldwide use bad excuses to save themselves from a shag.
The worst excuses to avoid having sex

According to a columnist for Health.com, Jenny McCarthy, “I’m too tired” is one of the commonest excuses used by people in their everyday life to avoid sex and deprive themselves of the satisfaction by indulging in it, Fox News reported.

The excuses falling next in line are “I don’t have time” and “I have a headache”.

McCarthy says that women use “I’m not loving my thighs” and similar body image issues as an excuse to avoid getting physically intimate with their partners.

Fear of missing out on important and socially hyped topics by not being able to watch TV is yet another add-on to the list of bad excuses.

Last but not the least, getting into the mood and gearing themselves up for sex seems to be a problem for a number of people due to which the excuse “I’m not in the mood” falls into the category of popular excuses made to avoid sex.

Oral sex enough for women!

Men are more likely to orgasm when sex includes vaginal intercourse and women are more likely to orgasm when they engage in a variety of sex acts, a new study has revealed.
Oral sex enough for women!

Findings from the study of sexual and sexual-health behaviours conducted by Indiana University has provided an updated and much needed snapshot of contemporary Americans` sexual behaviours, including a description of more than 40 combinations of sexual acts that people perform during sexual events, patterns of condom use by adolescents and adults, and the percentage of Americans participating in same-sex encounters.

The National Survey of Sexual Health and Behaviour (NSSHB) is one of the most comprehensive studies on these topics in almost two decades and documents the sexual experiences and condom-use behaviours of 5,865 adolescents and adults ages 14 to 94.

According to the study`s findings, one of four acts of vaginal intercourse are condom protected in the US (one in three among singles).

"These data about sexual behaviours and condom use in contemporary America are critically needed by medical and public health professionals who are on the front lines addressing issues such as HIV, sexually transmissible infections and unintended pregnancy," said Michael Reece of the Centre for Sexual Health Promotion.

Debby Herbenick, of the CSHP said Herbenick said: "Findings show that condoms are used twice as often with casual sexual partners as with relationship partners, a trend that is consistent for both men and women across age groups that span 50 years."

The report has also suggested that adults using a condom for intercourse were just as likely to rate the sexual extent positively in terms of arousal, pleasure and orgasm than when having intercourse without one.

Many older adults continue to have active pleasurable sex lives, reporting a range of different behaviours and partner types, however adults over the age of 40 have the lowest rates of condom use. Although these individuals may not be as concerned about pregnancy, this suggests the need to enhance education efforts for older individuals regarding STI risks and prevention.

The findings were published in the Journal of Sexual Medicine.
